A baby
who had been in the making for nearly two decade was successfully born in China
this week.
The
little girl, who is yet to be named, was conceived using an embryo frozen 18
years ago by a hospital in Shanghai.
Weighing
3,300 grams (116.4 ounces), she is the first child of a 45-year-old woman who
gave birth on June 27 in the province of Jiangsu, eastern China, reported
the People's Daily Online.
According
to the article, the birth of the baby broke the national record as she was
conceived with the old frozen embryo so far in China.
Her
mother, named Huang Qiong, decided to have the embryo frozen in 1998 after she
had trouble getting pregnant.
Huang,
who was 27 years old at the time, had been diagnosed with blocked Fallopian tubes and was undergoing fertility treatment at the Obstetrics
and Gynaecology Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai.

She
underwent two frozen embryo transfers, but failed both times.
She had
also failed one fresh embryo transfer.
A
frustrated Huang decided to halt the IVF treatment and focus on her work.
Last
year, one of Huang's friends, who was treated at the same hospital, got
pregnant with a set of twins.
This
prompted the middle-aged Huang to try for a baby again.
She
re-started her IVF treatment at the beginning of 2015, using the embryos which
had been frozen in liquid nitrogen in minus 196 degrees Celsius, the
report said.
In
November, she was thrilled to be informed that she had fallen pregnant.
On
Monday, she delivered a healthy baby girl in her native Jiangsu Province.

The
birth of Huang's baby broke the national record set just two weeks ago by a
mother from Guangzhou, capital of southern China Guangdong Province.
The
33-year-old woman gave birth to a boy on June 15 using an embryo frozen 12
years ago.
While
the Shanghai Health Bureau suggests human embryos should be frozen for up to
five years, the hospital in Shanghai has promised to keep freezing embryos
indefinitely as long as parents do not sign an agreement to give them up.
China
has witnessed an increase in IVF treatment after the central government
abolished the nation-wide mandatory one-child policy in January 2016.
