NUPENG wants firms sacking workers punished

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers has called on the Federal Government to extend sanctions it threatened on banks to companies in the aviation, oil and gas, and power sectors, which have started retrenching workers.

The union said this in a statement on Tuesday, while commending the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, for his threat that the government might withdraw the licences of banks currently rationalizing their workforce.

The statement signed by the President, NUPENG, Igwe Achese, stated that Nigerian banks were being unfair to the workers who toiled day and night to make their business viable.

He added that the workers were always at the receiving end of retrenchment, even when the banks continued to declare huge profits and dividends.

Achese reiterated his support for the minister’s position to impose sanctions on the banks through the withdrawal of their licences if they continued with the mass sacking.

He urged the National Assembly to be alive to its responsibility and put a halt to the gale of retrenchment in the sectors in order not to worsen the already saturated labour market.

The statement read in part, “NUPENG aligns with the two-week ultimatum issued by the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions for the recall of the sacked bank workers.

NUPENG is ready to mobilise and join forces with NUBIFIE in the picketing of the banks until the workers are reinstated.”
