Apple is
in talks to buy Jay Z's music streaming service Tidal, a report has claimed.
The
company, which owns iTunes and Apple Music, has opened discussions about buying
Tidal because of its close links to artists such as Rihanna and Kanye West, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Apple
recently started talks with the streaming service and they may not lead to a
sale, sources said.
The
terms of the deal are not known, but Jay Z bought Tidal for $56million last
year and its value will only have increased since.

The service has had Kanye West's the Life of Pablo album exclusively for more
than six weeks before it was released on other platforms.
Beyonce's
Lemonade was also released on Tidal before it was shared with other streaming
sites, such as Spotify.
The
service is the only one containing the music by Prince, who had a close
relationship with Jay Z.
Apple hope that by buying Tidal, they can improve their relationship with a
number of rap and hip hop stars who only release material through Jay Z's
service, sources said.
Beyonce,
Kanye West, Rihanna, Madonna, Calvin Harris, Usher, Daft Punk, Coldplay's Chris
Martin, Alicia Keys, Arcade Fire, Jack White, Nicki Minaj, Deadmau5 and Jason
Aldean are all co-owners of the service.
Tidal
costs $10 a month for basic access, and $20 a month for improved sound.
More than four million people use it, but the company has experienced
difficulties internally, with three successive CEOs leaving the company in a
year.
In
comparison, Spotify has 30million subscribers and around 70million free users,
who have to listen to adverts between songs.
Apple
Music launched its own streaming service, Apple Music, last year and has
15million subscribers. It costs $9.99 a month.
