Meals on wheels: The robots will deliver food
within a 3 mile radius Just Eat

An army
of autonomous robots will deliver takeaways to hungry Londoners.
Starship
Technologies, created by the founders of Skype, has developed
the six-wheeled autonomous robots that will deliver food for takeaway
firms Just Eat and Pronto.
The zero
emission robots, which can travel at speeds of up to 4mph, will be able to
deliver food to customers within a 3 mile radius of the
takeaway restaurant.
Customers
receiving their meals via robot will be sent a code via text to open the robot
and gain access their food.
Just Eat
chief product and technology officer Fernando Fanton said: “We’ve always been
committed to offering our customers new ways to order and pay for their food
and now we’re right at the heart of a new way of delivering food which is
exciting for us as it will be for those who find a robot on their doorstep.”
The
robots have already been tested on the Greenwich Peninsular and according to
Starship Technologies, have delivered food to more than 400,000 people without
being in a single accident.

Starship
Technologies founder Ahti Heinla said that the partnerships with Just Eat and
Pronto were part of the next phase of their development in running real robotic
delivery services.
The
testing programme will begin within the next few months and details of the
restaurants taking part will be announced shortly.
